Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Streams now on Google Maps

Mon, 11/23/2009 - 11:13 -- jmaslar

Many of the visitors to Trout University website have requested help in finding productive trout fishing streams, so we have started a section for that purpose; and we have given special attention to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).  We already have six of the better trout fishing streams listed in the GSMNP section with complete descriptions including how to fish that stream during each season of the year.

Wilson Creek Delayed Harvest Yields Rainbow

Tue, 11/17/2009 - 16:44 -- jmaslar

A portion of the Wilson CreeK near the town of Mortimer NC, was recently made a delayed harvest stream.  A friend of mine Johnny Dollar caught this HOG on the DH portion of the Wilson recently.  John caught her on a #18 Hetero-Genius nymph tied by Dave Hise of Casters of Hickory on a 9ft, 5X Flurocarbon leader. He used his rod of choice, a 9ft Orvis T3 5wt and reel was an Abel TR2 loaded with Rio Gold Line. Water was very clear and slightly lower than usual.

Over the years as I have been fishing, I have shamelessly ignored the numerous opportunities to photograph our experiences like the time Steve was chased by bees while visiting the “outdoors bathroom". Also, I neglected to photograph some of the nice scenery such as the giant buck crossing the stream, or the huge trout that we had caught (or missed). In fact, I must admit that I seldom ever took my camera along.

Best Fishing Knots Part II: The San Diego Jam Knot

Fri, 11/13/2009 - 16:09 -- jmaslar

According to an article published in the February 2009 Issue of Field & Stream, tests have proven the San Diego Jam Knot to beat all other knots in strength tests when it comes to attaching a fly or other lure to the eye of a hook. That is because the San Diego Jam Knot uses wraps around both the tag end and the standing line. This feature is what gives the San Diego Jam Knot its superior strength to beat the Clinch Knot and the Improved Clinch Knot.
