The Trout Next Door

Mon, 12/28/2020 - 22:12 -- smaslar
North Carolina offers winter trout anglers a unique opportunity to catch trout locally by stocking ponds in municipal parks with surplus trout. These "trout next door" often cannot survive in these waters through most of the year, but they are stocked on a "put and take" basis during the winter.

Here are some tips for pursuing the trout next door.

Neer Hair is a Winner in PA

Recently, we received a phone call from John in Pennsylvania who had recently purchased some Neer Hair and here are his comments. "Jerry - My order of Neer Hair arrived yesterday. Thank you for the prompt response. It is a real pleasure to work with Neer Hair. It is easy to work with, does not get waterlogged and can easily be shaped to whatever design I desire. I like the way it stands up to hard use. I just got off the water fishing with my good friend Forrest. He liked the Neer Hair and is interested in purchasing some from you.

Dapping For Trout

Sat, 05/23/2015 - 23:18 -- smaslar

Dapping for trout can be an exciting fly fishing method for catching trout. Watching a trout strike the surface, or even jump out of the water just a few feet away will surely get the adrenaline flowing.

Dapping works best when you are able to position yourself very closely to the trout without alarming it. Dapping is a fly fishing method in which you simply dangle the fly along or just above the surface of the water, trying to entice a strike.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Fishing in Small Ponds

While we at the Troutprostore prefer trout fishing especially the native trout found in the beautiful cold clear streams, we do fish in ponds when we are unable to trout fish for some reason. Also, in the mountains, there are some ponds that provide habitat for trout and there are some ponds in cities where some trout are stocked in the winter months.

With that in mind we have found a primer for pond fishing designed to introduce you to the experience of pond fishing

High Sticking for Trout Under Adverse Conditions

Tue, 03/18/2014 - 12:13 -- jmaslar

When conditions are great, catching trout from fast moving freestone, headwater streams anywhere in the nation, isn't difficult. However, consistently catching plenty of trout under both cold and high water conditions can present a challenge. Unlike what many novice anglers think, the difficulty of catching trout under adverse conditions has very little to do with the trout. It has everything to do with your ability to present

Fly Tying For Trout With Synthetic Hair Materials

Fri, 01/24/2014 - 22:15 -- smaslar

Tyers commonly use synthetic hair fly tying materials for large saltwater, pike, and musky fly patterns. These materials, which are known for their durability, especially their resistance to abrasion, and/or their favorable water shedding properties, work great for toothy species and long casts. However, these materials can also be used effectively in trout patterns.

Easy Tippet to Fly Knot

Fri, 01/10/2014 - 11:13 -- jmaslar

I was surfing the internet today and discovered a new knot for tying the tippet to the fly. The main features of the knot are the size, speed and strength.  It is very simple to tie and can be tied quickly. The small size makes it desirable for those small flies like the midges. In addition, it tests between 85% and 100% of line strength which is more than satisfactory for me. Clumsily as I am, I was able to master it very quickly after watching the video. Are you ready for the name? It is the Davy K named after its inventor Davy Wotton, a British Fly Fishing pro.

Windchill Chart and Fly Fishing Cold Weather

The photo was taken on a trip to the Park in 2010 and it one of my favorite reminders of how fast the weather can change. However, winter can be a great time for hiking and fishing in the mountains but you must be careful to protect yourself from the elements. Fly fishing in the winter including the Smoky Mountains National Park is difficult but not impossible in the winter. Here are some useful tips.
