The second annual Southern Trout Fly Fishing Fair will be held at the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee again this year. The Southern Trout Fly Fishing Fair will be held on Saturday the 31st of January 2015 which is the last day of the 25th Annual Wilderness Wildlife Week that runs from Saturday the 24 thru Saturday the 31st of January.
The Southern Trout Fly Fishing Fair enjoyed a great attendance of fly fishing enthusiasts last year and expected to be even bigger this year. The programs kicks off at 9:00 AM on Saturday and includes topics like fly fishing the SoHo, back country trout, bamboo rods, and campfire cooking. Also on Saturday, for those not attending the Fair, there are workshops including photography, digital printing, and making your won dream catcher as well as others. Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge is one of the South’s most popular winter events. It is made up of exhibits, performances, workshops, classes, walks and talks that are both informative and entertaining. These programs celebrate the customs, animals and plants of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding region. Wilderness Wildlife Week offers activities for all ages and brings thousands of nature lovers to Pigeon Forge each year. It is of special interest to music lovers since there are different musical presentations each day including ballads, hymns and bluegrass. These presentations often use the traditional old timey mountain instruments and are designed to highlight the Appalachian region. During the wild wilderness Week there is a KIDS TRACK program that consists of a series of informative and entertaining activities and workshops that gives the kids an opportunity to learn more about nature.
While you are at the week's event, why not try your hand at flyfishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are many, many miles of trout streams in the park, just waiting for your action. Here it the fishing strategy that I would propose. Fish a size 18 Blue-winged Olive nymph. The BWO nymphs are swimming nymphs that dart around in short spurts and hide wherever they can. They don't stay wedged up under the rocks like most of the other mayfly nymphs, that are clingers. Winter stoneflies should begin crawling out of the water to hatch within the next few days.
If the water is below 43 degrees, use a tandem rig with a Cream Midge larva on the bottom and as Cream Midge pupa above it. If a hatch is observed, it will be either small Blue-winged Olives or Cream Midges and If that is the case, switch to the BWO dun.
