Trout fishing wading boots advancement

Mon, 12/29/2008 - 15:01 -- jmaslar

I read the Trout Unlimited article about the possible bad effects of wearing the traditional felt soled wading boot. I have credited those boots with saving me from possible harmful falls on numerous occasions. Now, however, the felt that produced such good results is the cause of the spread of aquatic nuisance species from stream to stream. Because of this, a new "sticky rubber" has been developed and is currently in use by Simms,in their CleanStream boots, by Patagonia in their Riverwalker boots and will soon be available from LL Beam.

Fly Fishing for Trout among the Rhododendrons in Great Smokey Mountains Park.

Wed, 12/17/2008 - 11:28 -- jmaslar

We  frequently go to the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area of the The Great Smokey Mountains National Park.  While there, we sometimes fish along Rt. 441 between Gatlinburg and Cherokee NC.  We also walk up some of the smaller streams seeking the somewhat feisty wild rainbow and brookie trout,  leaving the lower elevations to the brown trout.  It always a beautiful.

Fly Fishing Rod Line by Orvis has Rapidly Become a Favorite.

Fri, 12/12/2008 - 17:10 -- jmaslar

The new line of fishing rods called Helios by Orvis is an award winning line of rods that has gotten the attention of Businessweek.  Businessweek has written an article about the line of rods that is now selling at 300% over target for the year.  Orvis is counting on this line of 14 different rods to juice up their Christmas sales which would otherwise be very slow this season.

Trout Eyes Affect Their Locations and Habits.

I was watching My Outdoor TV toady when I found an interesting video named "Trout Don't Have Eyelids" by Scott Linden.  He explains why trout remain out of the sun light; and where they are likely to be found.  In my experience, this is especially indicative of Brown Trout.  This is a good free video to check out and well worth the short Ford truck commercial you will have to wait out.

Alumni with Lunker Trout Makes Blog

Wed, 12/10/2008 - 10:34 -- jmaslar

Tommy Sliker is an alumni of TroutU who has the talent of catching fish wherever he happens to fish.  Here is a picture of him that was recently posted on a blog.  This is a lunker trout caught, I suspect, on the Davidson River in North Carolina.  While at the TroutU, Tommy was an avid student of trout fishing using both the fly rod and the spinning outfit.  His recent outing to a secret location in North Carolina yielded three trout, all over 12 inches.   All three were caught on Rapala lures.

What's your favorite rod?

Thu, 12/04/2008 - 15:22 -- jmaslar

A recent poll was undertaken by Southeast Flyfishing Forum asking that question.  Out of a total of 262 responses, the favorite company was Sage who received approximately 20% of the votes, edging out Winston by a mere 3 votes.   Surprising that G.Loomis garnered only 8% of the votes, and Orvis received only about 13%.
