The Trout Next Door

Mon, 12/28/2020 - 22:12 -- smaslar
North Carolina offers winter trout anglers a unique opportunity to catch trout locally by stocking ponds in municipal parks with surplus trout. These "trout next door" often cannot survive in these waters through most of the year, but they are stocked on a "put and take" basis during the winter.

Here are some tips for pursuing the trout next door.

Late Fall Trout Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Mon, 11/11/2019 - 23:10 -- smaslar

I've found that late fall is becoming one of my favorite times of the year to fish the Smokies. I consider late fall to be from the first of November until the winter solstice. While the trout fishing in late fall may not provide the largest number of fish, I've found that fishing this time of year offers decent fishing with some additional benefits.

Fall Brown Blitz on the Chattahoochee River

Fri, 10/16/2015 - 15:11 -- jmaslar

The Chattahoochee River consists of 48 river miles of designated trout water in a park managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service. The rich cold waters that feed the Hooch, as it is called by the locals, provide a great environment for brown trout and the best part is that it so close to the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia.

Muskegon River Regulations

Tue, 07/28/2015 - 11:17 -- jmaslar

Michigan DNR is looking into making some necessary changes to the regulations as they relate to the Muskegon River. Over the years, the river has seen a great deal of pressure and illegal activities. In some cases chumming with enormous amounts of eggs has been practiced by some anglers. After chumming, they fish by dragging beads through the water. This hardly seems like a sporting event! There are other issues as well and they have been addressed by the Michigan DNR who held a meeting last night.

Snapping Turtles Invade Utah's Weber River

Fri, 07/17/2015 - 10:25 -- jmaslar

Bad news out of Ogden: Our biologists believe there is a breeding population of snapping turtles in the lower Weber River. Snapping turtles are relatively new to the area and are not native to Utah; they can be very aggressive and dangerous to people, so be careful, and do not approach them. If you see a snapping turtle in this area, please call 801-476-2740.

Hatches in General

Fri, 05/08/2015 - 10:34 -- jmaslar

We had an angler contact us at Troutprostore and he wanted a hatch chart for a particular state. That is a good question and it is often asked. However, it is a difficult question to answer due to the wide variety of the water. Even the water within a particular stream will vary affecting the aquatic insect population. For example, hatches vary with respect to the water temperature, at higher elevations, the hatch occurs several days in advance of the hatches in the lower elevations.
