Kayak Fly Fishing for Trout

Mon, 12/29/2014 - 07:25 -- jmaslar

What I remember most about winter fishing is slogging through snow well over ankle deep on occasions and on other occasions the guides on my rod were frozen over, so I tell myself that I am too old for winter fishing. Appalachian Brook Trout are North Carolina’s only native species and they are my favorite trout for several reasons. They are the most colorful and their fall colors make them subject of many phonographs. They are found in small streams that exist in the higher elevations where the scenery is the most enjoyable. The hike in to these streams is enjoyable to me as well, not to mention the exercise.

Fly Fishing South Holston River Headwaters, Virginia

Above the fish hatchery there is a dam on the river that created a small pond. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland fisheries stock the South Holston below the dam across from the fish hatchery and downstream of that point. Just above the pond, the stream flows through a small canyon. In some places you will have to wade to progress upstream. Now keep in mind, the South Fork of the Holston River is a small creek at that point. It is the beginning of the South Holston River miles above the part that most anglers are familiar with.
