Winter Trout Stocking Schedule for Tennessee

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 11:37 -- jmaslar

Each year 80 streams and small lakes located in mid to western Tennessee are stocked to provide a trout fishery. Due to the warm summer water or due to habitat that does not support trout preproduction, these streams have low abundance of wild trout, or no trout at all. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) stocks about 325,000 9-12 inch trout between February and October. While trout fishing is allowed year-round on most of these streams, many of these waters are too warm for trout by mid summer.

Fly Fishing South Holston River Headwaters, Virginia

Wed, 12/17/2014 - 11:21 -- jmaslar

Above the fish hatchery there is a dam on the river that created a small pond. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland fisheries stock the South Holston below the dam across from the fish hatchery and downstream of that point. Just above the pond, the stream flows through a small canyon. In some places you will have to wade to progress upstream. Now keep in mind, the South Fork of the Holston River is a small creek at that point. It is the beginning of the South Holston River miles above the part that most anglers are familiar with.

Cherokee Fly Fishing Contest HURRY

Mon, 09/01/2014 - 10:08 -- jmaslar

It is not too late to catch your biggest trout of the season at Qualla Country Trout Tournament held in Cherokee, N. C. The Eastern Band of the Cherokees are having their tournament on September 5 through September 7, 2014. The tournament is open to anyone who has the $11.00 entry and the only one restriction and that is the exclusion of the 2.2 miles of catch-and-release waters. That leaves the remaining 28 miles of privately stocked freestone streams open for your conquest. By the way, this is the largest privately owned and stocked waters east of the Mississippi.

Pack it in, Pack it out

The nice thing about trout fishing is that it gets you out and into the beautiful outdoors. However, please remember to leave the landscape exactly as you have found it. Here is an example of how the wildlife can be harmed by a careless person. Obviously, someone had consumed a six pack of soda or other beverage and without thinking left behind the plastic ring. The turtle apparently crawled through the plastic ring as a juvenile and became a prisoner of the ring as it grew. Please do not let this happen on your account.

Chad Doughty of Winder was below the Buford Dam on the Hooch and had just started to fish from his kayak when he hooked th monster. Since he had a Rooster Tail with a six pound line on a small spinning reel, he had a major fight on his hands. In fact, he had to get out of the kayak and run down his prize for some 45 minutes before he land it.

Trout Fishing The Ararat River In Mount Airy, North Carolina

Mon, 05/26/2014 - 22:50 -- smaslar

Schzaammm! I could almost hear Gomer say as we walked into the Mayberry Courthouse on Main Street in Mt. Airy, NC. The small town of Mt. Airy, which is most famous as the birthplace of Andy Griffith, and as the alleged inspiration for the town of Mayberry, also boasts a lesser known attraction: trout fishing. Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Three generations of the Trout Pro team visited Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina on Saturday, to fish the Delayed Harvest streams.
