Michigan DNR is looking into making some necessary changes to the regulations as they relate to the Muskegon River. Over the years, the river has seen a great deal of pressure and illegal activities. In some cases chumming with enormous amounts of eggs has been practiced by some anglers. After chumming, they fish by dragging beads through the water. This hardly seems like a sporting event! There are other issues as well and they have been addressed by the Michigan DNR who held a meeting last night. The purpose of the meeting was to solicit input to help in drafting new regulations. It is recommended that you provide your input by emailing [email protected]. (Photo: Delal Pektas, WZZM)
In an unrelated story, trespassing including drunkenness, rioting and foul language had become common on the Muskegon river. This illegal floating down the Muskegon River is now being patrolled by a task force made up of volunteers who patrol the river from the Crotan Dam all the way to the Newaygo/Muskegon line on Maple Island Road. There are five boats on the river with two officers in every boat each weekend.
The Sheriff of Newaygo County says the new task force and the river watch program have worked well together in the past year. "Last year we had a 136 arrests in about a 14 week period," said Sheriff Pat Hedlund. "This year so far, we are nowhere near that." This information was provided by ABC Station WZZM 13.
