First, what do we mean by tailwater? Tailwater is the water below a dam or other hydroelectric facility that is subject to changes in flow. The water is released at various rates and scheduled times in accordance with policies established by the US Government, but controlled by the local hydroelectric authorities.
We spent a beautiful fall day fly fishing and spinner fishing the upper South Toe River last weekend. With the fall colors just starting in the mountains, and the perfect weather, it was a great day to be on the stream.

Recently, my good friend James Marsh and Christopher Tobias had an opportunity to spend a few days fly fishing primarily for brook trout in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Chris had served 8 years in the Marines and completed 3 tours of duty overseas including one in Iraq. Now, he wanted to get in some fly fishing before heading out on a deployment with the Army in Afghanistan. He picked the perfect partner in James Marsh who is our resident expert in the GSMNP although he is too modest to admit it.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is filled with great trout fishing opportunities. While the big named streams get most of the attention, there are a number of lesser known opportunities. Here are 5 of these overlooked streams, on which I almost never see another fisherman:
“I love catching brook trout, but I haven't seen any in a long time.” I guess I sounded like a little boy again with my wishful thinking. For Memorial Day Weekend, we headed to the NC mountains. I thought we’d end up at Linville, but we were sidetracked by the alluring Watauga in the Foscoe/Valle Crucis area.
Some of you may be traveling to Townsend Tenn, for the Troutfest 2011 to be held on May 14. If so, you may want to fish some of the great streams that exist in the Park.
