Here in North Carolina we are starting to face the extremely warm weather of summer as we usually do in June, and we are concerned with the warm water temperature issue while fly fishing for trout. Water temperature is very important anytime of the year but especially during the hot summer season.
Kind of weird -- in a good way. That's the only way I can describe trout fishing on the Lower Saluda River Tailrace in Columbia, SC. While I'm used to fishing in the cool, shaded streams of the mountains, Columbia, SC, located in the Piedmont 100 miles from the mountains, is one of the hottest cities in the entire region. It was 94 degrees (not bad for the first week of May) when we stopped fishing in the afternoon, yet the water temperature was 58 degrees throughout the day. If you are planning a western trout fishing trip this year to Western Montana or Northwestern Wyoming, you are on the right track. The water that feeds the Northwest Rockies comes mainly from snowpacks and the snowpacks are near normal this year. We had a chance to go fly fishing on the Little River in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Saturday, spending a mid winter day with Perfect Fly inventor and trout fishing guru James Marsh. This winter has been unusually warm and wet in our area of the country, so it's good to see the streams full of water again after several dry years.
Matthew and I headed up to Upper Wilson Creek to celebrate Trout Day 2012. Trout Day is our unofficial first trout fishing trip of the year, typically January 1st, but this year it was the 2nd. Wilson, known for its brown trout, is a picturesque trout stream, designated as a National Wild Scenic River.
While enjoying our night before Christmas with my son Stephen and his family, I asked him if he was going to go trout fishing during the Holidays. He said that he would try to get out on Monday, January 2. I suspect that will present a fair opportunity as the water temperature should be above 45 degrees and most probably near 50 degrees, due to the unusually warm weather this year here in North Carolina; and I am well aware of the water temperature and the effects that it has on trout.
