Snapping Turtles Invade Utah's Weber River

Fri, 07/17/2015 - 10:25 -- jmaslar

Bad news out of Ogden: Our biologists believe there is a breeding population of snapping turtles in the lower Weber River. Snapping turtles are relatively new to the area and are not native to Utah; they can be very aggressive and dangerous to people, so be careful, and do not approach them. If you see a snapping turtle in this area, please call 801-476-2740.

My Fly fishing Strategy for Now

Fri, 06/19/2015 - 10:13 -- jmaslar

It is not a good idea to generalize about hatches but I have some suggestions especially for the Eastern USA. If I wes fishing today, I would start fishing with the big swimming Slate Drake nymph because they are easily caught and eaten by trout. Drakes are starting to hatch but remember, they hatch out of the water. Only the spinners get on the water unless it is purely accidental. When the Slate Drakes, Light Cahills or Sulphurs are hatching, there will be a spinner fall late in the day. Often, you can catch more trout fishing the spinner fall faster than you can during the hatch.

Dapping For Trout

Sat, 05/23/2015 - 23:18 -- smaslar

Dapping for trout can be an exciting fly fishing method for catching trout. Watching a trout strike the surface, or even jump out of the water just a few feet away will surely get the adrenaline flowing.

Dapping works best when you are able to position yourself very closely to the trout without alarming it. Dapping is a fly fishing method in which you simply dangle the fly along or just above the surface of the water, trying to entice a strike.
