Cold Weather Fly fishing

Fri, 11/16/2012 - 12:04 -- jmaslar

The importance of Chironomidae commonly called midges is often overlooked. Midges are very small two winged flies that resemble mosquitoes. Their lives start with eggs deposited by adults after they have mated. Midges normally hatch periodically all year around and are available as food for trout in the larvae, pupae or adult stages throughout the year. Almost all of the midge larvae and pupae are dull shades of light green, cream or red. Even the red ones are dull red.

Wild and Scenic Rivers - Keeping them Free

Thu, 10/25/2012 - 08:37 -- jmaslar

They focus on removing dams that are no longer used for electricity, and protecting the pristine waters like the Merced River by designating them wild and scenic.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Fri, 10/12/2012 - 09:31 -- jmaslar

October is the best time to visit the Great Smoky Mountains national Park as the color is spectacular. I suggest a leisurely motor trip through the loop around Cades Cove in the western part of the park. As srive, stop to visit some of the old homesteads and quaint little churches and cemeteries and reminisce about the "good ol days". In addition to an opportunity to see deer, turkeys and bears and after you reach the end of the cove take a hike on Abrams Creek for a spectacular view Abrams falls.

Three generations of us headed up to Stone Mountain State Park today to hit the well-stocked Delayed Harvest water. Early October is a great time to do this, as the catch and release regulations have just gone into effect, and the stream is chock full of trout (and, sometimes, fishermen).  Also, the weather was outstanding, and Drew was even able to try to catch some of the falling leaves.
