October is the best time to visit the Great Smoky Mountains national Park as the color is spectacular. I suggest a leisurely motor trip through the loop around Cades Cove in the western part of the park. As srive, stop to visit some of the old homesteads and quaint little churches and cemeteries and reminisce about the "good ol days". In addition to an opportunity to see deer, turkeys and bears and after you reach the end of the cove take a hike on Abrams Creek for a spectacular view Abrams falls.
Absolutely do not forget to take your fly fishing rod and flies as Abrams offers some of the best trout fishing available in the park. The rich waters are abundant with aquatic insects making the stream a delight for fly fishing.
