Fly Fishing with Terrestrials
Terrestrial insects by definition are insects that are born or living on land rather than in the sea or the air. The only time that terrestrial insects get into the water is by accidentally falling or accidentally landing or by being washed into the water. Ants are by far the most common terrestrial that can be found as you have discovered if you have ever planned a picnic.
Fly Fishing the Upper Madison River
Go with John Foster on his trip to the Upper Madison River about one mile from Ennis Lake and not far from the Yellowstone National Park. Watch as John skillfully plays and lands a huge brown. Also, be sure to watch the video in its entirety so you can get a close up view of that beauty. Click here for more information about the Madison River including a map.
Fly Fishing the West Gallatin
You meet a lot of friends on Facebook and I believe that is where I met John foster and his son John Clay Foster. They fish the great Montana Rivers all year long. I have included a video of theirs about the Gallatin River shot from a head camera as they float fish. They have many more videos and I may just post them from time to time.
Fly Fishing Streamers in the Fall
In the fall, the brown trout are getting in good shape for the spawn and they need a good deal of food intake. They often feed on small bait fish like the sculpins to satisfy that appetite. A good streamer to use is the brown sculpin since sculpins are often found in almost any body of water. Here is some information about that popular streamer.
South Holston River Fly Fishing Report
The big browns are in prespawn mode on the South Holston River, feeding heavily during small windows throughout the day. While good numbers of fish can be caught almost anywhere on the South Holston, River, our biggest fish are being caught on low water floats in the middle or lower sections of the SoHo.
Fabulous dry fly fishing is starting around 3 PMeveryday. Sulfurs, craneflies, blue duns, blue winged olives, and midges are coming off in hordes and the fish are readily rising. It is perhaps the best dry fly activity we have seen all year.
Fall Trout Fishing
We went up to one of our favorite spots last Saturday for some trout fishing. Out of respect to Dan, I don't disclose the location of this particular watershed.
Fly Fishing with the Mahogany Dun
The Mahogany Dun is an important mayfly that can be found throughout the entire USA. There are several species of Mahogany Duns and hatch times depend greatly on the part of the country they are found in. Some species of the mahogany dun hatch during both the summer and fall of the year with the larger hatches usually occurring later in the year.
