Crazy Trout Fishing Memories

Mon, 12/31/2012 - 16:34 -- smaslar

Maybe it's the time of year, or maybe it's dodging a Mayan end of the world scare, but I started waxing nostalgic about some of our crazier experiences trout fishing. Like the numerous occasions my Dad would accidentally cast a lure through the mountain laurel such that the line was draped over a branch. As he retrieved his lure, a trout would hit it as it left the water, and we would have to walk up and unhook the suspended trout.

Fall Trout Fishing

Fri, 09/28/2012 - 16:00 -- jmaslar

Autumn is my favorite time of the year for trout fishing. The weather is ideal with cooler days, cool crisp nights, less rain and with definitely less humidity it can be enjoyable. In higher elevations, there may be a dusting of snow or frost. The water is usually low, cool and even flowing making for some great casting. In early fall, the water temperatures may be in the seventies, but before winter sets in the water temperature can easily drop down to the low forties. I have had it ice up on the guides, but that does not deter me.

Held on the North Fork of the Potomac River in Seneca Rocks, WV, the gang competed against competitors from Colorado to Florida. The event spanned four 3-hour sessions over 2 days, with varying rules in play for each session and total length of fish caught determining the winners.

Top Ways A Trout Fisherman Can Tell If He Needs To Lose Weight

Sat, 07/10/2010 - 12:10 -- smaslar

After years of trout fishing in various stages of life and with different people, I’ve developed a set of criteria to determine whether or not it’s time for a fisherman to lose weight.  If you find yourself described by more than 5 of the descriptions below, you may want to hit the gym.

You look like a frog, even before you put the waders on.

You’re not the one taking your own boots off at the end of the day.

You need a fishing companion to remove the hook from your own landed trout because the fish is still too far away.
