How To

Match the Hatch Techniques and Lessons

Sat, 10/10/2009 - 09:59 -- jmaslar

1.      Get a good hatch chart. You will need a hatch chart specific to the stream/area you want to fish. Most hatch charts are not specific enough to the local area, nor are they made from the proper stream samplings of the insects in the stream. They are generic and thoughtlessly created. Don’t use them. Currently, we only know of one place to find good hatch charts

Fly Fishing with Grasshoppers

Tue, 08/18/2009 - 17:01 -- jmaslar

I slow down my trout fishing in the month of August and I believe that the trout are slower as well.  The water is low making the trout more cautious as they must elude predators.  Also, the temperature of the water is high, and warmer water contains much less oxygen.  Therefore the trout will be less active through the hot dog days of summer.

Trout Streamers, Nymphs and Indicators Discussion

Thu, 08/13/2009 - 16:17 -- jmaslar

I came across an interesting article, entitled "Streamers and Indicators" by Brent Postal, in one of my favorite magazines, the American Angler.  (I like the on-line edition of the American Angler because they post the entire article on-line and do not use teasers.)  The novel approach by Brent is that he prefers to use two indicators, his favorites being cork, and he spaces them about an inch apart.

Top 5 Tips to Catch Trout in Summer

Tue, 06/30/2009 - 15:56 -- jmaslar

1) FISH EARLY AND LATE: Trout feed more in the morning and the evening, especially the big brown trout.   Also, there is less interruption from vacationers.  I have caught trout in Deep Creek in the evening after folks were tubing all day.

3) CHOOSE AREAS CAREFULLY: Two VERY IMPORTANT SPOTS are inlets and outlets because the temperature is vastly different and they are the super highway of food.

Fly Fishing Tip: Cleaning Your Fly Line

Fri, 06/26/2009 - 11:51 -- jmaslar

In the early summer, the performance of your fly line can deteriorate due to dirt or residue build up on the line.  Dirt can get on the line if you are stripping from shore or when you are handling the trout.  Algae is  found in all waters and it is a culprit that can cling to the fly line causing poor performance as well. You may notice the trout fishing fly line is not floating as well as it once did and so it is time to clean the line.

When the water is high...slow down

Tue, 04/28/2009 - 01:00 -- dfarnsworth

Flood waters can be dangerous, but productive if you hit them at the right time. The first order of business when fishing more extreme conditions like this is one of safety. Water is powerful and it deserves your respect...be careful.I recently went trout fishing on a small mountain stream after several days of heavy rain. The stream was up to say the least. It must have been 2 feet higher than normal...which isn't uncommon to see in the NC mountains.
