Walter Gremlin Sinkerizer

Wed, 03/07/2012 - 12:31 -- jmaslar

Trout University would like to introduce you to something you might find interesting. It’s called the SINKERIZER. Not only good for selecting the correct weight for trout fishing but also for other game fish. Recently Water Gremlin Company in White Bear Lake, MN called our attention to a cute little gimmick to help anglers determine the correct size of sinker to use. We think it is something you might find interesting.

Current Hatches in the Great Smoky Mountains

Wed, 05/04/2011 - 11:16 -- jmaslar

Some of you may be traveling to Townsend Tenn, for the Troutfest 2011 to be held on May 14. If so, you may want to fish some of the great streams that exist in the Park. Here is a snap shot of some of the hatches that will be occurring in the GSMNP during your stay in the Smokies. I will be there helping my good friend James Marsh the creator of Perfect Flies.

Dry Flies or Nymphs in Winter

Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:33 -- jmaslar

Here in Charlotte, NC we have been snowed in with 4 to 5 inches of snow followed by freezing rain. This is a good time to sit at the computer and try to answer a popular question about winter fishing. We often hear the question: “Which is the better fly to use in winter, dry fly or nymph?” Perhaps the question would be better phrased: "when does the water get to cold to catch trout on the dry fly".

Trout Fishing Offseason

Tue, 01/04/2011 - 04:21 -- smaslar

Now, for those trout fishermen among us with the right outlook on life, you’re thinking What off season?  We trout fish year round.  I typically head up to the North Carolina high country, for example, on January 1st each year to kick off the new year.  However, during the cold months, when things get slow, there are a number of things the trout fisherman will want to get caught up on:

Top 5 Tips For Winter Fly Fishing

Tue, 12/07/2010 - 21:03 -- smaslar

Aside from obvious safety concerns, such as dressing for the elements, being sure your vehicle is in good working order, making sure you don't get stuck when bad weather comes in, taking a friend fishing with you, and not falling in, here are 5 tips for winter fly fishing.

1.  Fish deliberately.  The fish are moving slowly, and as such, a slower, more deliberate approach is necessary.  Don't give up after the first cast to a promising looking spot.

2.  Use midges and streamers.  They are the most common winter food source.

Fly Line Storage

Sat, 12/04/2010 - 13:14 -- jmaslar

If you are not a winter fisherman and I can understand if you are not, this tip is for you.  Many of you have several lines and need a place to store them. Of course, some may be stored right on the reel, but what about line memory setting in and what about the others?

Store them in a shoebox and they get tangled up and it is tricky trying to determine the weight so here are some tips from December issue of Field & Stream.

Winter Fly Fishing in the Smokies

Thu, 11/18/2010 - 15:27 -- jmaslar

It is the time of the year when most anglers are not interested in fly fishing and they have put away their fly rods in favor of a rifle or to watch football. However, it may surprise you to know, that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park still presents great fly fishing opportunities for trout. At this time of the year, the GSMNP may still have some beautiful colors in the lower elevations and the leaf looker traffic is all but gone. In addition, it is still a good time to see the deer, elk and bears that abide in the park.
