Fly Line Storage

If you are not a winter fisherman and I can understand if you are not, this tip is for you.  Many of you have several lines and need a place to store them. Of course, some may be stored right on the reel, but what about line memory setting in and what about the others?

Store them in a shoebox and they get tangled up and it is tricky trying to determine the weight so here are some tips from December issue of Field & Stream.

First be sure that your lines are clean. Clean each line by soaking them in warm water with a few drops of mild liquid soap. Note that most anglers prefer to use non detergent soap. After the soaking pull your line thru a clean cloth removing all the dirt and grime before applying the fly line dressing; then hang the lines up to dry.

To make easy identification of the line weights later, use Lefty Kreh’s smart system. Make a long dash on the 5-wt line with a permanent black magic marker. Then if a line is lighter make a dot in front of the line indicating that it is a 4-wt line. If the line is heavier, make a dot behind the line indicating that it is a 6-wt line while two dots would indicate a 7-wt line. For other types of lines, use a different color marker.

Now carefully wind the lines in long loops and hang them on hooks or nails. A hollow cardboard tube from paper towels or gift wrapping paper placed over the nail will allow the loops to hang without too great of a bend.
