My son Stephen and I took a trout fishing trip to the Whitewater River in North Carolina. The Whitewater River is a rugged river originating in North Carolina and it subsequently empties into Lake Jocassee in South Carolina. It also contains a beautiful waterfall of over 400 feet in height.
I went to the local gas station this morning as usual for my morning cup of coffee and I was surprised to see a man dressed for trout fishing. He had a good pair of waders belted at the middle, and a good pair of boots with felt soles. He even had a camo cap on his head. However, it was a little strange to see his wife in the passenger seat holding a dog and she was not dressed for fishing. I usually do not see a passenger who is not dressed for fishing and especially I do not see dogs with anglers. By the way, I did not mean to profile him!
To continue our discussion of mayfly nymphing tactics, we need to understand a little about entomology. The Hendrickson nymphs are not excellent swimmers or clingers so they are in the crawling or "catch all" category of mayflies. They are important because the trout can eat them more easily than the clinger type of mayflies like the Quill Gordons and the March Browns.
The South Holston has been giving up the goods as some really big fish are being caught. The migrations of lake run rainbows continue to make their way up river. The first of the big lake run brown trout are also being caught.
I recently did a description of the Penns Creek in Pennsylvania and that leads me to discuss the nature of the Blue Winged Olive mayfly. It is my opinion, that the Blue Winged Olive is the “universal” mayfly because it is found in just about every trout stream in the USA. Also, the hatch occurs over a much longer period of time than most of the mayfly family.
