Water Temperature and Trout

Fri, 07/26/2013 - 09:41 -- jmaslar

Now in the peak of summer it is time once again to do the trout a favor and discuss water temperature and how it relates to trout and specifically trout fishing. Remember, not the air temperature but the water temperature is what we are discussing. It is a well known fact that water temperature has a big impact on trout’s metabolism. The higher the temperature above their comfort zone the more they are stressed.

Fly Fishing When There is No hatch

Trout waters are nearing flood conditions in my neck of the woods so I will only think about fishing. I am wondering what approach would be best when you spend a bunch of dough, drive three hours to your favorite stream and there is no hatch occurring. In the rare event that there no hatches taking place, I believe that I would choose a nymph. But I would choose a nymph or larva imitation that was most plentiful and available for trout to eat; and in many cases it would be a swimmer nymph.

Water Temperature and Common Sense

Angles often ask "At what water temperature should they stop fishing for trout?" Provided reasonable care is taken, there is nothing wrong with catching trout with a fly when the water temperatures get up to or into the low seventies, however, it may not be easy. When water temperatures reach the low seventies, the trout almost cease feeding. The problem is not with the water temperature as much as it is with the low oxygen levels associated with the warm water.

Fly Fishing the Light Cahill Nymph

Light Cahills will be hatching through the end of June. The nymphs are clinger nymphs that spend most of their life cling to the underside of rocks or between the cracks on the bottom of the runs and riffles of the streams. These nymphs need the fast highly oxygenated water to exist and that is why their bodies are made to cling on the bottom of rocks.

Project Healing Waters 2-Fly Success

Thu, 05/02/2013 - 11:31 -- jmaslar

This year was the seventh annual event and it was a huge success by any measure. Everyone had a fantastic time, many fish were caught, and over $220,000 was raised to keep programs running across the nation. The 2-Fly has grown from humble beginnings seven years ago to a full weekend of activities. Things kick off Saturday with a casual pond bass and bluegill tournament in the afternoon, followed by a riverside cocktail party and dinner with a full program of special guests and inspiring speakers. Then the 2-Fly Tournament follows on Sunday, followed by an awards ceremony.
