- Cut the fly off of the leader and carefully store it where it can get air such as a fly-drying patch.
- Clean the fly line with a line cleaner or a mild soap and then wipe it dry with a soft cloth or towel. In normal use, the line will accumulate dirt or algae on the surface. A fly line will float and cast better if it has been cleaned. After cleaning, a lubricant can be applied if you so desire.
- Wind the fly line with the leader back onto the reel evenly while applying a slight amount of tension. After the season is over or for long periods, the line should be wrapped onto their original spools for storage. Never store your lines in the direct sunlight or even in a trunk of a car. The exposure to high heat or ultraviolet rays of the sun will cause rapid deterioration.
- Remove the reel from the rod and wipe the reel with a clean cloth. After the reel has had time to completely dry store it in its bag however, do not close the bag in an airtight manner. Some air entering the bag will allow the reel to dry out.
- Disassemble the rod by carefully griping the two sections and pulling the ferrules apart. Use care to keep the alignment straight between the two sections and pull in a straight line. Pulling at an angle can damage the rod. Clean the rod with a clean soft cloth using mild soap to remove any dirt that may have accumulated. Place the rod, ferrules down, in a clean soft bag for storage.
