I have been trying to get a good phone interview with my friend Justin Shroyer who is the head guide at The Appalachin Angler Guide Service in Boone, NC. I wanted to know how such a youing man could become so proficient as a trout fisherman and as a guide. Each time that I called him, he had been out on the stream guiding, so much for the recession!
However, I was able to learn this about Justin. He grew up in the beautiful Southwest Ohio area, on a small family farm. He graduated from Appalachin State University with a degree in Environmental Biology and Ecology. Justin cut his teeth on streams by running shuttles for a canoe company and he also began to guide part time. The owners were wise enough to promote Justin to head guide where he currently conducts float and wade fishing trips on the Watagua, South Holston, Nolichucky and New Rivers.
By the way, his favorite flies are Circus Peanut, Woolhead Sculpin and just about anything with soft hackle.
