I've found that late fall is becoming one of my favorite times of the year to fish the Smokies. I consider late fall to be from the first of November until the winter solstice. While the trout fishing in late fall may not provide the largest number of fish, I've found that fishing this time of year offers decent fishing with some additional benefits.
Hi, As I sat on my desk I received a phone call from a West Virginia fly fisherman who turned down the Sunday NFL Football game that his fishing buddies were going to watch. BOY is he glad that he did. He used a Great Autumn Sedge Pupa from TroutProStore and on his first cast caught a 20 inch brown. He went on to catch several more browns over the next hour or more. Allen who is a good friend of Troutprostore bagged this steely on the Squamish River recently. Allen said that he regularly fishes the Squamish River and the Vedder Rivers for coho, chum and the odd chinook. There's a fair number of Dolly Varden & bull trout in some of the tributary rivers. This nice steely is about to be released to the Squamish River.

The Chattahoochee River consists of 48 river miles of designated trout water in a park managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service. The rich cold waters that feed the Hooch, as it is called by the locals, provide a great environment for brown trout and the best part is that it so close to the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia.
It is not a good idea to generalize about hatches but I have some suggestions especially for the Eastern USA. If I wes fishing today, I would start fishing with the big swimming Slate Drake nymph because they are easily caught and eaten by trout. Drakes are starting to hatch but remember, they hatch out of the water. Only the spinners get on the water unless it is purely accidental. When the Slate Drakes, Light Cahills or Sulphurs are hatching, there will be a spinner fall late in the day. Often, you can catch more trout fishing the spinner fall faster than you can during the hatch.
Brook trout are the only native coldwater trout in North Carolina. These trout generally exist in cold, clean mountain streams above 1,500-feet in elevation; however, most populations of wild brook trout are in streams over 3,000-feet in elevation.
In 2013, the General Assembly authorized the creation of a special license plate to promote the Native Brook Trout. All proceeds from the sale of this plate will be used to fund public access to and habitat protection of brook trout waters in the state.
Good news for fly fishing Utah’s Weber River as the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources, with the help of Utah State University, is using sophisticated technology to understand and improve the Weber River population of the native Bonneville Cutthroat Trout. These unique trout grow to be quite large and they travel a long way up tributaries for spawning.

Appalachian Brook Trout are North Carolina’s only native species and they are my favorite trout for several reasons. They are the most colorful and their fall colors make them subject of many phonographs. They are found in small streams that exist in the higher elevations where the scenery is the most enjoyable. The hike in to these streams is enjoyable to me as well, not to mention the exercise.
