The Cinnamon Caddis pupae are very vulnerable to trout as the pupae swim to the surface to hatch, making this the most productive time to fish with a Cinnamon Caddis fly pattern. The trout will feed on the caddisflies as they make their way to the surface of the water assisted by air bubbles. The trout may even jump out of the water during the mayhem of feasting on the pupae, which can alert you to the hatch.

The difficulty comes in determining when the hatch is actually occurring. The hatches typically take place in the late afternoons, though later in the year (depending on the species), they may occur around nightfall. Usually, the hatches occur in the riffles. Frequently, the caddisflies are depositing their eggs simultaneously with the emergence of the pupae. Otherwise, it is unlikely that you will notice that a hatch is even taking place or the trout's eating the insects.

Presentation:

When fishing the pupa imitation of the Cinnamon Caddisfly, present them almost the same way as you would the larvae. The one difference is that you should fish the pupa with very little, if any, weight. When fishing the pupa imitation, allow your fly to swing downstream and near the bottom, rising to the surface.

In the riffles, cast up and across, or make a long down and across cast in calm water. Allow the fly to sink, mending the line as necessary. Once the fly is downstream of you, stop the rod swing, holding the rod tip fairly high. Ideally, your fly should rise to the surface in the areas where the insects are emerging. Typically, the trout will hit the fly as it surfaces. Before casting again, allow the fly to stay on the surface of the water for a couple of seconds.
