The Great Autumn Brown Sedge is also called the Fall Caddis or the October Caddis and Great because it is large. Obviously with a name like October Caddis, they can be found in the Eastern and Mid West of the USA in the months of September and October. At an approximate hook size of 10, they provide a good meal for a trout.

With an orange color they resemble large flying moths and they emerge mostly at night as well, causing them to sometimes be confused with moths. The female adult deposits her eggs at night or at dusk or even at dawn. Their avoidance to sunlight again is characteristic of moths.

Presentation:

With the characteristics shared with the moths, it is suggested that the adult pattern be fished at dusk or at dawn when the adults are most likely to be active. The adult fly pattern can be cast near the banks in slow moving water avoiding the faster water. Also to imitate those that are depositing their eggs on the surface, cast the fly near the end of the runs or riffles where the water is slowing down, allowing the fly to float. Should you see the adults diving to lay eggs on the bottom, add a little weight above the fly to make it act as a wet fly.
