The South Holston River Heats Up

The South Holston River Report:

This has been our "go to" river this winter, and in all winters past. The steady water temperature pouring out of this tailwater dam provides great fishing year-round. Lately, anytime the air temperatures creep above 40 degrees, the bite will be on. The majority of the fish are stacked in the riffles and deep slots, eating blue wing nymphs, midges, and scuds. We are fishing size 18-22's in those patterns. The South Holston will continue to crank up as the weather warms and hatches become more prolific. March is always a great month to land some big fish as the big browns feed heavily trying to gain back the weight they lost during the spawn. We will keep you posted.

What to Look For:

The South Holston tailwaters are primed for a great spring bite. With high water levels, both the fish and the bugs should be happy. Look for some great dry fly action on the river as the blue wing olives will pour off almost every day for the next two months. In addition, the big browns are coming off the beds, hitting the riffles, and feeding hard. The sulfurs on the South Holston will start showing up mid April, along with blue wings and tan caddis. The massive lake run brown trout will start making their way up the river at the same time.
