The Brown Drake Mayfly:
The Brown Drake is found in trout streams nationwide. It is a very large mayfly that is usually found in slower moving water of streams and some lakes. They start hatching just prior to dark and continue into the night. The brown Drake spinners fall in the evening.
They are a big meal for a trout. The Brown Drakes are burrowing nymphs spending their days burrowed in the bottom of streams, coming out at night to feed.
They can be found in rivers and lakes that have sand or pebbles for them to burrow into. Often time they are found in water that is marginal for trout due to its being warm. When you find the Brown Drakes, you will usually find browns because they as are large and provide a tasty food the browns.
The best time to fish using the Brown Drake imitations is just before dark and if the water is not too dangerous, fish with them after dark during the hatch. That is when the large hungry browns are gulping them down. Always be sure to have some Perfect Fly imitations of the emergers, duns and spinners available in your fly box.
