Flies and the insects that they imitate.

My Fly fishing Strategy for Now

Fri, 06/19/2015 - 10:13 -- jmaslar

It is not a good idea to generalize about hatches but I have some suggestions especially for the Eastern USA. If I wes fishing today, I would start fishing with the big swimming Slate Drake nymph because they are easily caught and eaten by trout. Drakes are starting to hatch but remember, they hatch out of the water. Only the spinners get on the water unless it is purely accidental. When the Slate Drakes, Light Cahills or Sulphurs are hatching, there will be a spinner fall late in the day. Often, you can catch more trout fishing the spinner fall faster than you can during the hatch.

Pale Morning Dun Fly Featured

Many anglers consider the PMD to be the most important fly in the West, even more important than the Blue Winged Olive fly. It has predictable hatches that cover a long period of time. There are two major almost identical species the infrequens and the inermis so the same Super Fly will imitate both of them.

Little Sister Caddisflies Added to Troutprostore

Wed, 03/18/2015 - 14:57 -- jmaslar

Our line of perfect flies are exact imitations of the actual aquatic insects, terrestrials and bait fish. Many fly shops however, classify their flies as dry flies and nymphs only. At Troutprostore, we are far more exact in creating imitations of insects. We stock the insects in their actual stages of life, for example caddisflies are not just adults or nymphs; but in fact, they are adults, larvae and pupae. Larvae and pupa are nymphs, and conversely, not all nymphs are either larvae or pupae.

Blue Quill Nymph Flies Now

The Blue Quill sometimes known as the Mahogany Dun or Little Blue Quill is one of the first hatches of the year along with the Quill Gordons and the Blue Winged Olives. The hatch occurs slightly ahead of the larger Quill Gordon and continues over a longer period than does the Quill Gordon, making it just as important as the Quill Gordon hatch.

How to Choose the Right Fly

Tue, 04/15/2014 - 14:36 -- jmaslar

When choosing a bait, lure of fly, you obviously need to select the one that provides the best odds for success. In most situations, there is a certain bait, lure or fly that you could use that would that would provide the highest odds of success. When you are choosing a fly to use for trout, you should select one that best imitates the food that is most available and most plentiful for the trout to eat at that point in time.

Ouill Gordon Early Season Hatch Understood

Mon, 03/03/2014 - 13:20 -- jmaslar

The Quill Gordon hatch will usually start as soon as the water gets into the low 50 degree range and remains there of a couple of days. This can occur as early as late February and continues into the first part of April. Sometimes this hatch can be interrupted by a strong cold front causing the water temperature to drop into low or mid forty degree range. At any particular elevation where the hatch is occurring, the hatch will usually still continue.
