Terrestrial insects by definition are insects that are born or living on land rather than in the sea or the air. The only time that terrestrial insects get into the water is by accidentally falling or accidentally landing or by being washed into the water.

A typical terrestrial is the Japanese Beetle and there are thousands of different species of beetles in existence ranging from tiny sizes up to huge beetles or Coleoptera. One of the most common species found along trout streams is the Japanese Beetle. In the hot summer months when the aquatic insect hatches have slowed, they can be a major source of food for the trout.

They are available starting in the first part of July and extending sometimes as late as early September. They can often been seen crawling along the vegetation near the banks of streams and feeding on the foliage. When there is a stiff wind blowing, many of the beetles that are near water will end up falling into in the water. Should you see this occurring, that will be the time to use the “Perfect Fly” Japanese Beetle fly. This is usually the best time to try an imitation of them.

Presentation:

Usually, a down or down and across presentation works best when used in still or slow moving water with a smooth surface. As with many terrestrial patterns, it is best if you can find an individual trout hitting the surface and then cast to that individual trout. However in the absence of that situation, blind cast the fly to likely spots where there may be trout near the banks. In fast moving water such as pocket water, present the fly using and upstream or upstream and across presentation.
