The Great Autumn Brown Sedge is also called the Fall Caddis or the October Caddis and Great because it is large. Obviously with a name like October Caddis, they can be found in the Eastern and Mid West of the USA in the months of September and October. The habitat for these caddis flies is fast moving, clear mountain water usually where there are a lot of woods. At an approximate hook size of 10, they provide a good meal for a trout.

With an orange color they resemble large flying moths and they emerge mostly at night as well, causing them to sometimes be confused with moths. The female adult deposits her eggs at night or at dusk or even at dawn. Their avoidance to sunlight again is characteristic of moths.

These caddisflies usually crawl out of the water and shed their larva shuck to emerge as an adult. They will do this on the banks or the rocks near the stream. Once they are adults, the trout do not appear eager to eat them until the females lay their eggs. For that reason, we think the pupa stage of the hatch is the most important stage to imitate.

Presentation:

As we previously indicated, these caddisflies start to hatch in the late afternoons, hatch at night, and may still be hatching at early morning light. Therefore you should start using the pupa pattern late in the afternoon unless it is cloudy and then you might consider a little sooner. Start casting the pupa pattern down and across near the ends of the pools, and mend the line to get it down. Allow the fly to swing around directly in a downstream direction. Then hold the rod tip high in the air to let the fly rise back to the surface in the current. You will often see the strike occur at or around the time that the fly hits the surface
