The Green Caddis sometimes known as the Green Sedge is the Rhyacophila species of caddis flies and is one of the free-living types of caddis flies. What we mean by that is that they do not build cases that they carry with them. This characteristic makes them more available for the trout to eat. Although they can live in just about any habitat, they usually prefer faster moving water like the rifles and runs of the freestone mountain streams.

Most of the Green Sedges are hatching from early spring until mid-summer, however, they have been observed hatching in the early Fall. When a major hatch is occurring, it may require about a month before all of them hatch, deposit their eggs and die. On a late after noon in the spring, the pupae will swim to the surface as they emerge.

Presentation:

Present your pupa pattern on the bottom of the riffles and runs during the early phase of the hatching process. Use as much weight as necessary to keep the fly as near to the bottom as practical. Afer the cast, lift your rod on a swing to bring the fly back to the surface. The motion is to duplicate the pupae rising from the bottom to the surface of the water to hatch. Whether you fish in an upstream or a downstream direction, make sure you allow the fly to rise back to the surface. Most of the time, the strike will occur at or near the surface.

The fly could also be presented just under the surface on a dead drift if you prefer. Depending on the water conditions, one method may to prove to be more effective than the other and trial and error is the only way to determine which method will work best in that situation.
