Recently I made a fast and necessary trip northward and was fortunate enough to travel through the 
beautiful Shenandoah Valley. I decided to spend the night at the Village Inn in Harrisonburg, Virginia because it is near the unique Mossy Creek and I wanted to see how it survived an unusually hard winter.
The moss that blankets the water in the summer was not there and I could see the shifting silt on the bottom and some of the gravel areas as well. The shifting silt is what makes Mossy Creek so unique as Brian Trow from Mossy Creek Fly Fishing has pointed out. The bed of the Mossy Creek changes from year to year and your favorite fishing pool one year will not be there the next year and you will need to find new favorites. Mossy Creek always presents challenges and that is part of the fun.
I took RT 42 through Bridgewater and drove along Mossy Creek Road to the first of two parking areas and noted the sign explaining the regulations that preserve the excellent fishing on Mossy Creek. After reading up on the regulations, I proceeded up the Kyles Mill Road to the second parking area and the second bridge across Mossy Creek.
I could not help but notice how the stream meanders slowly along the lush green pastures and gently under the bridge. What a beautiful setting for the house on the hill overlooking the stream!
As I continued, I took some interesting pictures that I plan to compare with the same shots in the summer, just for fun.
As I was leaving Harrisonburg, I stopped at the Mossy Creek Fly fishing store to say hello to Brian and to snap another picture. Brian said that the fishing on Mossy Creek is heating up with several guided trips daily. Unfortunately, I had no time for fishing but I hope to return in the summer
