Fly Fishing Blue Winged Olive Nymph

Fishing The Blue-winged Olive Nymph:

The blue winged olive nymphs of the Baetidae family are free swimmers. They can vary in color from light shades of brown to light olive. They are generally slim and narrow shaped more like a minnow.

Presentation:

When fishing in waters where hatches of the Blue Winged Olive occur, it may be wise to fish the nymph. Use either the swing style, or a tandem rig with a BWO emerger and  a dry fly pattern used as an attractant fly. This might prove to be an appropriate method to fish, or just using a strike indicator will also work. It will often be necessary to use some weight adjusted to the water depth and the velocity of the current.

The nymph pattern can be used to search and locate trout in the hours preceding a hatch or in the earliest part of the hatch. You may also consider using a nymph when the flies are emerging as trout prefer to eat the nymphs just prior to their emerging.

The last thing to remember is that the trout prefer to get a good return on their investment of energy. So when feeding on these tiny blue winged olives, they will eat them like “cheezits” but they will not expend a lot of energy to get them. Therefore, you can avoid the rougher more turbulent water and concentrate on the smoother flowing water because that is what the trout will do to conserve energy.
