A little bit of detective work is required to determine when the giant black stoneflies are hatching. Look for nymphal shucks and/or empty skins leftover from when the insects changed to adults. This is likely the only clue you will see that there is a giant black stonefly hatch taking place. The adults are usually only found in the upper limbs of nearby trees or in the sky in the mornings and near dark.

The nymphs spend most of their time between and under rocks, coming out to eat and to hatch. Interestingly, at any given time ,they are available to the trout in three sizes, since they live for three years.

Basically, we recommend fishing the giant black stonefly nymph in one of two ways. Both methods are particularly effective for large brown trout.

The first is the high sticking method, which is covered in our class by the same name.

The other method is relatively unconventional. The point of this method is to copy what the actual insects do as they move toward the banks during the hatch. As numbers of the giant black stoneflies begim heading to the stream's banks to hatch, the trout will take notice. The trout will then start picking them off as they migrate to the banks. The angler can take advantage of this by using the following technique early in the morning or late in the day, provided that the stream's shoreline is relatively free of debris and vegetation.

Begin by casting up and across the stream while standing on the bank far enough from the water's edge to avoid scaring the trout. Make sure your fly is weighted heavily, and that it stays on the bottom of the stream. Work the fly toward the bank in continuous 2 – 3 inch retrieves, using your weak hand to make the twitches. Make sure you work your fly completely to the shore. To be sure you can detect the strike, follow the fly's drift as it progresses downstream with your fly rod.
